"What you see is what you get. I'm just a guy who loves adventure. I'm Sonic the Hedgehog!"
Cocky, goofy, and sometimes a little too egotistical, he may throw round jokes at the wrong time but he’s shown to be loyal, brave, and always there to help a friend out. The corny jokes made by Sonic nowadays just don’t have the same spark as his jokes from the Adventure era, it could be nostalgia though. Such as in Sonic Colors, the humor in that was pretty eh... It doesn’t help that the change of the voice actors and terrible voice direction also give this Sonic a bad name. Don’t get me wrong though I still really like this Sonic, he doesn’t bother me as much as others are by him, the upcoming Sonic Frontiers gives me hope he will become a bit of a more serious character, but still keep his confident charm.
This is definitely my favorite version of Sonic, everything from his corny quips to his RADICAL attitude. While still managing to not crack bad jokes at inappropriate times. Sonic was given a brand new and bold look, which is one of the best character designs of all TIME!!!! Compared to the 2010s Sonic, he sounds less impatient and snarky(Which aren’t bad character traits, but I would say they are a bit overdone in the more modern games). After the adventure era, you’ll notice that a big tonal shift occurred, along with a new voice actor, Jason Griffith. The games were being targeted to a more mature audience, namely, Shadow the Hedgehog(2005). Sonic was more calm and collected; with great wisdom as well, think of the epic quotes from Sonic and the Black Knight. During these years, Sonic had great depth and was a more complicated character than you would think. At first glance, he may seem like you’re average dated 90s mascot, but he’s shown to have plenty of heart and intelligence, who’d be willing to forgive another even if they had been his enemy in the past.
Ahhh, back in the early 90s! When Sonic was a silent protagonist, but still! He managed to exude a cool and sassy attitude with his, at the time, unique idol animation. After a few seconds, Sonic would start impatiently tapping his foot and looking at the player with an annoyed expression. Americans in the 90s fell in love with the blue blur! The EDGY(Well what was thought to be edgy in the 90s…) and RADICAL craze at the time definitely helped I would say! I believe Americans and Japanese got two different versions of sonic, there wasn’t too much to go off at the time when it was just the games, but there was the box art! In the American box art, you can always see Sonic with a big ol’ smirk!! The Japanese box art, however, was a different story, while he still had the same enthusiastic energy as the American box art, sometimes you would see him with a serious frown, prepared to face his enemies! This is one of the reasons I prefer the original box art designs, as his character has a bit more depth to him.
